I’ve always been fascinated by taiwanese women – that is, since I discovered about them.
In the early days when I was learning Chinese, back in Paris, I watched online TV to practice listening. My favourite shows quickly became Taiwanese rom-coms. In particular this one:
I particularly liked the way gender relations worked in these dramas: strong women, delicate men. Of course it’s TV, written for a public of teenage girls, and idealising the men. But in my experience of taiwanese people, something of it is true. Strong women, business minded, solid, who won’t be trampled on – yet always ‘act cute’. And nicely elegant and delicate men – refined – especially emotionally.
